Studio or Nature?

Choosing the ideal location for your dream photoshoot can be a tough decision – studio or nature?  I’ve been lucky enough to work with Chanté in a variety of outdoor settings as well as studio environments, and it’s clear that both have their unique advantages and challenges. Let’s dive into some of the pros and cons of each!

Studio Photoshoot

Pros:

  • Consistent weather: No need to worry about rain, wind, or sunshine; your shoot will go ahead no matter the forecast.

  • Controlled lighting: Studio lighting is always guaranteed, so no worries about harsh midday shadows or low light in the morning or evening.

  • Privacy: In most cases, you’ll have the studio to yourself, allowing you to relax and pose without feeling self-conscious. Plus, you can make use of the entire space!

  • Easy outfit changes: No need to change in public spaces, and you’ll have the privacy to switch looks as needed.

  • Access to props: Studios often provide props or allow you to bring your own, and you won’t need to worry about them being blown away or taken.

  • Flawless eyes: You won't have to squint or shield your eyes from harsh sunlight, ensuring your eyes always look their best.

Cons:

  • Cost: Studio rentals can be pricey, so it’s essential to research and find the best value for your budget.

  • Limited availability: You might be restricted to certain days or times based on the studio’s schedule.

  • Comfort: On hot days, a studio without air conditioning can quickly become uncomfortable.

  • End result:  Your photos may look 'staged' and less natural.

Nature Photoshoot

Pros:

  • Stunning scenery: With breathtaking natural backdrops, your photos will have a unique, organic beauty. The possibilities for locations are endless!

  • Cost-effective: Nature shoots are often free, though you’ll want to confirm with local authorities or landowners for permission in certain spots.

  • End result: With an experienced photographer, your photos will look completely natural!

Cons:

  • Weather dependency: Nature shoots are more susceptible to weather conditions, but don't let that deter you! Check out my blog ‘Weathering the Storm’ for tips on how your photographer can work with unpredictable weather.

  • Inconsistent lighting: Cloud cover can make it tricky to achieve uniform lighting throughout your shoot.

  • Unwanted background distractions: Shooting in public spaces may lead to random strangers and other distractions appearing in your photos. However, photographers can typically find angles to minimize this, and editing tools make it easy to remove unwanted individuals.

  • Bright conditions: A shoot during broad daylight can make it difficult to keep your eyes open, and you may even be tempted to cover them.

  • Public attention: It can feel a little awkward being photographed in a public setting with strangers watching, but most photographers know how to make you feel at ease.

So, which do I prefer?

While I love shooting in all types of locations, I’m especially drawn to nature shoots. Living on the Gold Coast, with its stunning beaches and landscapes, it’s no surprise that I’m a big fan of the great outdoors!
